Offshore Weather Measurements

Vaisala has a decades-long tradition in providing solutions to offshore weather observations. Our products and services are being used as part of Environmental Monitoring Systems and Helideck Monitoring Systems. Our products and systems fulfill the relevant UK CAA and Norwegian standards (CAP 437 and NORSOK N-002) and comply with the relevant ICAO requirements and WMO recommendations.

Onshore Observations

What to monitor, where, and how will depend on the characteristics of the port in question. Reliable and accurate measurement of visibility, wind direction and speed are critical not only when approaching the port but also in berthing safety. Approaching storms and high winds can interfere crane operations preventing loading and unloading. In addition, oceanographic measurements such as current, wave height, sea level, and salinity can all be part of a modern system supporting complex port environments. The end result is increased safety, and successful and continuous cargo handling in port operations.

Ship Instrumentation and Shipboard Weather Systems

Improving ships' onboard machinery and equipment performance minimize machinery downtime and maximize energy efficiency resulting in cost savings. Monitoring ship engines, lubrication, hydraulic and compressed air systems by using Vaisala's stable measurement instruments helps maximizing machinery performance. Moisture in oil measurement instruments give a real-time picture of the oil's condition in lubrication and hydraulic systems. Dew point measurement instruments help to ensure the compressed air is dry enough to secure reliable system operation. Accurate humidity measurement is needed for more efficient control of moisture in inlet engine air.

Lightning at sea

Lightning Detection in Maritime

Lightning is an indication of extreme weather and poses an operational safety hazard for your business, and it puts you at risk for loss of revenue during downtime. A lightning detection system can help minimize downtime, but only if there are no false alarms. Terminal and platform operations are at risk of losing thousands of dollars per minute, or more, if operations are stopped! Implementing a lightning warning system that supplies reliable data results in a successful program, with information you and your employees can trust. You can’t afford to stop operations when lightning is not a real threat.
