Total Organic Carbon (TOC) monitoring and control in wastewater streams

Sugar production requires a huge amount of water, about 1 000 liters of wastewater for 1 ton of sugar cane crushed, and as a result, the industry generates wastewater (effluent) daily. The plants are required to monitor and control the organic load in effluent streams as excess organic content released can result in severe pollution problems in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Before treatment and recycling, the quality of the water must be defined. The refractive index has proven to be a very successful measurement method for organics monitoring in effluent or sweet water streams. The refractometer acts as a watchdog.
