Greenhouse gas (GHG) measurements for climate action
GHG measurements are essential in the fight against climate change
Greenhouse gas (GHG) measurements are crucial in combating climate change. Carbon dioxide (CO₂), which accounts for 60-70% of the warming effect from human activities, is the primary GHG driving climate change. Accurate CO₂ measurements are essential for understanding and mitigating its impact.
Scientists, researchers, industries, and policymakers use GHGs data to monitor human and industrial emissions, develop emission reduction strategies, and implement climate change mitigation measures.
As a leader in environmental measurement technologies, Vaisala supports global initiatives like the WMO Global Greenhouse Gas Watch (G3W) and the World Economic Forum Initiative - Net Zero Carbon Cities, aiding efforts to track and reduce emissions.
Trusted CO₂ measurements
Vaisala CARBOCAP® Carbon Dioxide Probe GMP343 accurately measures CO₂ concentrations with excellent long-term stability thanks to continuous reference measurement. The probe is designed for easy installation and maintenance-free operation.
Panel discussion: Insights to accelerate urban climate action
Are you ready to challenge the status quo and lead the next era of urban climate action?
70% of global CO₂ emissions originate in urban areas. Cities are at the frontline for climate mitigation, but how do we prioritize the most impactful actions? Join a solutions-driven discussion with leading experts who are shaping the future of urban greenhouse gas (GHG) monitoring and mitigation.
CARBOCAP® technology inside
Vaisala has decades of expertise in CO₂ measurements.
First launched in 1997, the Vaisala CARBOCAP sensor features a groundbreaking innovation — the micromachined, electrically tunable Fabry-Pérot Interferometer (FPI) filter for built-in reference measurement. This reliable and stable sensor delivers accurate measurements across a wide range of industries and applications, from building automation and safety to life sciences and ecological research.
We use a single-beam and dual-wavelength NDIR (non-dispersive infrared) technology for measuring CO₂ concentrations. The patented CARBOCAP technology is used in all our CO₂ sensors, incorporating a unique tunable band pass filter that we developed and manufacture in our state-of-the-art cleanroom.
GHGs measurement applications
Typical applications
- Urban and industrial GHGs emissions
- Medium-tier GHGs monitoring network supplementing existing high-tier reference sites
- GHGs concentrations and fluxes across farms, agriculture and forests
- Soil and water CO₂ concentrations
- Industrial carbon capture utilization storage (CCUS): Learn more
Measure CO₂ concentration
- Meteorological organizations planning to deploy accurate CO₂ measurements in WMO G3W compliance for better modeling of transportation GHGs fluxes in a 100 x 100 km grid
- Government agencies and municipalities conducting research and monitoring projects deploying urban stations integrated with CO₂ sensors
Enable flux measurement
- Agriculture/food/forestry producers conducting private research to demonstrate the impact of carbon neutrality activities, which are typically conducted in partnerships with institutions or independently with service providers
- Research projects for determining baselines and sinking capacities of natural areas, which can also include CH4 natural leakages such as those from wetlands and permafrost
