Xcel Energy improves transformer fault assessments using online DGA monitoring

Explore how Xcel Energy, a prominent utility company, enhances its transformer fault assessment strategies by integrating a mobile online Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) monitor alongside traditional offline methods.
This case study highlights Xcel Energy’s experience using the Vaisala OPT100 DGA monitor on a mobile platform to analyze gassing patterns in transformers with abnormal lab-based DGA results.

An Oncor Case: Using real-time online DGA to safeguard a transformer's end-of-life operation

This case study from Oncor explores the detection of severe faults and the overall monitoring process and procedure during an old transformer’s final months in service – its end-of-life. The study demonstrates how Oncor Electric Utility was able to use Vaisala’s online DGA monitor to help systematically monitor, then validate the issue and replace the transformer before it experienced any major operational failures or expose staff to safety risk. Additionally, the case provides insight into how important keeping a transformer performing well through its end-of-life is, proving the return on investment from a real-time online DGA monitor
