Vaisala opens new office in Mumbai to expand presence in India

Last week, Vaisala opened a new office in Mumbai, officially marking the establishment of Vaisala India. The expansion is part of the company’s strategy to strengthen its presence in the Asia-Pacific region and tap into India’s rapidly growing high-tech industries.

The new office will support Vaisala’s Industrial Measurements division, with a focus on serving key sectors, including life sciences, electric vehicle battery production, semiconductors, and electronic manufacturing services (EMS).

"India has always been part of our growth strategy," said Berndt Köhring, Vice President of Industrial Measurements APAC. "Expanding into the world’s fourth-largest economy is a logical next step for us."

The opening ceremony included remarks from company leaders and Dr. Eva Nilsson, Deputy Consul General of Finland in Mumbai, who highlighted the role of Finnish companies in advancing India’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. Traditional elements, including a lamp-lighting and ribbon-cutting ceremony, were incorporated into the event.

India has become an increasingly important market for Vaisala, and the business in the country has seen significant growth between 2018 and 2024, thanks in part to local partnerships. The new office will allow the company to deepen customer relationships and provide closer support for compliance, process optimization, and environmental monitoring.

“We are confident that our continued collaboration with Indian partners will generate even greater value,” said Kian Wei Yap, Director of Industrial Measurements, Other Asia Pacific.

While some of Vaisala's key offerings in the Indian market are monitoring systems for pharmaceutical GMP compliance, moisture sensors for battery manufacturing, and cleanroom solutions for electronics and semiconductor production, the new Indian office will provide the entire product spectrum of Industrial Measurements. This means that, for instance, power, biogas, and liquid measurement customers in the region will also receive the improved offering.

“Vaisala India is not just a business operation—it’s a commitment to support India's technological advancement with proven measurement expertise,” said Rajnikanth Umakanthan, General Manager of Vaisala Industrial Measurements India.

Vaisala launches new measurement probe for improved dry room control

Vaisala launched today the new DMP1 Dew Point and Temperature Probe to monitor environmental conditions in critical manufacturing rooms and spaces. With dew point measurement capability down to -70°C, and a rapid response, hundreds of times faster than other competing measurement technologies, the new compact DMP1 is ideal for dry rooms.

The new Vaisala DMP1 probe provides precise measurements in demanding dry processing conditions, such as those found in lithium-ion battery production, where humidity control is critical to the performance of manufactured batteries. Employing advanced measurement technology, the DMP1 ensures that dew point conditions remain as specified in all areas of a manufacturing dry room, thereby helping to maintain both product quality and manufacturing safety.

The DMP1 can be easily integrated into centralized production, safety, and quality monitoring systems.

“The fast response of the new probe means that customers’ control systems are able to respond quickly, in a timely manner, ensuring the protection of product quality and safety,” says Juhani Lehto, Product Manager for Precision Instruments, Vaisala.

“This means that customers can control any deviations in the dry room dew point efficiently. Quick reaction times translate into improved workplace safety in battery manufacturing, maintaining high product quality as well as avoiding waste in the production process.”

Designed for measurement stability, with long calibration cycles, the DMP1 has a low maintenance requirement and can withstand accidental humidity spikes caused by humans, machines, or external air conditions.

Improved visibility and control of the entire dry room

The DMP1 is a part of the modular Vaisala Indigo measurement ecosystem, offering plug-and-play compatibility with connected smart devices. For example, it can be connected to an Indigo300 transmitter to display data locally and transmit measurement values to automation and control systems. The probe can also be connected to an Indigo80 handheld device for maintenance work, and interchangeable probes mean that downtime is minimized and service work is simplified.

Summarizing, Lehto says: “In the past, dew point control in dry rooms has been limited by bulky sensors with a limited measurement range and a slow response. The DMP1 probe is therefore a major step forward because it resolves these issues, providing process managers with greater visibility of environmental conditions and more time to respond when conditions deviate from ideal.”

Using the HMK15 Saturated Salt Calibration Device: A Practical Guide

Saturated Salt humidity calibration
Industrial Measurements
Life Science

In the world of humidity calibration, sometimes the simplest tools can offer the most practical solutions. The HMK15 is a saturated salt calibration chamber—a compact, low-tech device that provides stable humidity references for calibrating hygrometers. While it might appear basic, its reliability and independence from a power supply make it a valuable asset in many metrology labs.

The Working Principle

At its core, the HMK15 relies on the predictable behavior of saturated salt solutions. Each salt creates a known relative humidity (RH) environment when equilibrated in a sealed chamber. For example:

•    Sodium chloride (NaCl) provides approximately 75% RH
•    Lithium chloride (LiCl) provides approximately 11% RH

These humidity points are commonly used in calibrations and offer a dependable reference without complexity.

Benefits of a “Primitive” Solution

Although it may seem very simple, the saturated salt method offers key advantages:

•    No power required – Ideal for field or bench use without electrical connections
•    Cost-effective – Minimal components, long service life

However, it’s not without limitations. The stabilization process is slow, and results are sensitive to ambient conditions. Calibrations must be performed in a stable temperature environment to ensure accuracy.

Preparing the HMK15 for Use

Here’s how to set up the HMK15 calibration chambers:

1.    Sodium Chloride Chamber

  • Add 10 ml of distilled water to the chamber
  • Gradually mix in sodium chloride while stirring
  • Once fully saturated, seal the chamber with the lid to prevent contamination

2.    Lithium Chloride Chamber

  • Add 12 ml of distilled water
  • Stir in lithium chloride gradually
  • Be aware: this reaction generates heat, which is normal
  • Allow the solution to cool and stabilize before using the chamber for calibration

Cross-contamination between salts is a risk so, always ensure the lid for each chamber is screwed on after mixing the water and salts to avoid introducing foreign substances.

A Reliable, Low-Maintenance Option

For metrologists who require stable humidity references without the need for complex systems, the HMK15 is a dependable and easy-to-use option.  It may not be the high-tech tool in your calibration lab, but its simplicity and reliability make it ideal for many routine humidity calibrations.
