Extending Sensor Capabilities
“Humidity sensor laboratory measurements” is the name of one of the R&D project for next summer’s Giant Leap internship. Research Scientist Terhi Lehtola tells more about the tasks awaiting the Giant Leaper.
How can we measure humidity in an environment with almost no humidity at all? Our goal is to extend the measurement capability of our existing humidity sensor towards extreme environmental conditions. To achieve the goal, we are planning to make changes to the sensor materials and algorithms.
You can use your skills in science and data processing as well as your creativity, as we can re-think and reform many existing sensor properties. The measurement environment in our laboratory will be prepared by the start of the project, but hands-on skills in building laboratory instruments are also valued (although not mandatory) in our team.
During the project, an average workday of the Giant Leaper will consist of 1) conducting measurements in our laboratory, 2) analyzing measurement data (e.g. with Matlab), 3) explaining the observed phenomena by means of physics and chemistry, 4) suggesting changes in the measurement algorithm, materials or sensor structures, 5) attending meetings and conversations with team members, and 6) writing reports. The Giant Leap project and its results will have a large impact on the future of the sensor.
This project is specifically fit for scientist-minded people. Our work group includes people with various disciplines: scientists with a background in chemistry or physics, a software developer, and people with a lot of experience in sensor technology and fabrication. To strengthen our team, we need a curious scientist-minded person with fresh ideas who can help us in evaluating the sensor performance and developing it further.
Application period has ended (Feb 11)!
