16:40-17:00 Ludovic Thobois: Improve ATM efficiency with the support of advanced wind and wake turbulence data

Dr Ludovic Thobois, Scientific manager at Leosphere - a Vaisala Company

Many airports are currently reaching saturation and are looking for solutions to increase runway throughput. New technologies such as the Leosphere WindCube Lidar sensors can provide advanced wind and wake turbulence data, which are required for the implementation of new procedures such as RECAT. Recent implementation of RECAT has shown a significant capacity increase of minimum 5%. Lidar sensors have played a major role in the safety assessment phase, providing ground-truth wake turbulence data.

Wind data provided by the Lidar have also recently demonstrated their role in the prediction of runway occupancy time and runway exit. Such achievements could lead to the development of new decision support tools for air traffic controllers.

Lidar sensors are now ready to be deployed at airports on a large scale for operational projects, for RECAT or as part of the implementation of more advanced dynamic separation schemes.
