Starch Cooking

Starch cooking at size press

The starch used for paper sizing is usually cooked in continuous cookers. The goal is to produce consistent starch viscosity to avoid problems during sizing operation.

Achieving cooking objectives with in-line measurements

Vaisala's process refractometer is used to control the concentration of the cooked starch. The refractometer verifies that the liquid has been cooked properly: the starch viscosity is consistent, and the total solids content stays stable even if cooked in batches. Precise measurement of the concentration provides consistent quality for the different paper grade production.
