The comprehensive RVR modernization project strengthens aviation safety and operational capacity across Greece.

Vaisala has been selected to supply advanced Runway Visual Range (RVR) systems to seven major airports across Greece in a significant project modernizing the country's aviation infrastructure, including state-of-the-art LT31 transmissometers and Vaisala's AviMet® RVR software solution.

The project is managed through Printec, a technology leader in Central and Eastern Europe, which is the integration partner in this turnkey solution for the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA). Printec will oversee the installation of complete RVR systems at Athens, Rhodes, Kos, Alexandroupolis, Kavala, Kozani, and Ioannina airports over a two-year period.

Modernizing critical aviation infrastructure

Greece's airports have long relied on Vaisala visibility measurement equipment, and Athens International Airport, the country's primary aviation hub with two runways, has operated with legacy Vaisala sensors and software for more than 25 years. This modernization project builds on that proven foundation to further enhance operational efficiency and safety across all seven airports.

"This comprehensive RVR modernization represents a significant investment in Greece's aviation infrastructure," said Panu Partanen, Vice President, Meteorology and Aviation at Vaisala. "By deploying our most advanced visibility measurement technology across the country's major airports, we are enabling safer operations and improved capacity during challenging weather conditions."

"Printec has been a reliable partner for Vaisala in delivering aviation solutions across the region," said Georgia Botsika, Cluster General Manager for Greece and Cyprus at Printec. "This collaboration ensures that Greek airports will benefit from world-class technology and expertise, strengthening aviation safety and operational performance for years to come."

Advanced technology across diverse geographies

The project is particularly noteworthy for its scope and technical complexity. Athens will receive three LT31 Transmissometers per runway, while the six other airports will each be equipped with two LT31 units per runway strip, supporting multiple operational configurations. All systems will include Vaisala's AviMet® RVR software, ensuring seamless integration and consistent operational procedures across the network.

The selected airports represent some of Greece's major aviation hubs, spanning diverse geographical regions and weather patterns across the country. This nationwide deployment showcases the reliability and versatility of Vaisala's RVR solution in varying climatic and topographic conditions.

Comprehensive service and training

Beyond the hardware and software delivery, Vaisala will provide extensive support services including on-site training across the two-year implementation period, factory acceptance testing, remote diagnostics, extended warranty coverage, and software upgrades. Vaisala will oversee installation activities at the first two airports (Athens and Rhodes), with Printec handling subsequent installations under Vaisala's guidance.

Manufacturing of the systems has already commenced, with Athens and Rhodes units scheduled for shipment before year-end, and installations expected to commence in early spring 2026.
