Comparing Remote Sensing Systems to Towers

Both towers and remote sensing devices have a role to play in wind measurement campaigns. As industry practices change and consultants become more familiar with using remote sensing data, wind developers are re-evaluating their approach to campaign design.

Data

Remote sensors gather accurate data up to 200 meters above ground, and can gather hub-height wind data from many sites and from many locations within a single site. Met towers are more limited but are better understood through longer industry use.

Ease of Use

Met towers offer a familiar technology with long-established standards of practice, but generally take much longer to set up and are more difficult to maintain. Remote sensing systems can begin collecting data the same day they are delivered to the site.

Cost

Do you think remote sensors are more expensive than towers? You may be surprised. The cost to purchase a remote sensing system may be comparable to a met tower in some markets, and may be higher in others. When you start looking at all the costs of using each, the remote sensing system may be more affordable.
