Join Vaisala's Tamara Murusidze and guest speaker Yik Lam of Biogen to learn how inline refractive index supports confident protein concentration monitoring in ultrafiltration/diafiltration (UF/DF) and single-pass tangential flow filtration (SPTFF) processes. You will learn where conventional approaches create risk, how inline RI works as a PAT tool, and what to consider when implementing it from process development through manufacturing scale.

As protein concentrations rise and downstream processes become more intensified, delayed offline measurements and indirect estimates can introduce uncertainty into critical concentration decisions. In ultrafiltration, diafiltration, and single-pass tangential flow filtration, inline refractive index (RI) offers a practical way to move from estimation to real-time measurement.

This webinar is designed for:

  • Bioprocess engineers
  • Downstream scientists
  • Process development teams
  • MSAT professionals
  • Biotech professionals working to improve concentration control, process visibility, and scale-up confidence.

What you will learn:

  • How offline and model-based concentration methods are complemented by refractive index  in UF/DF and SPTFF
  • How inline RI can be applied across development, scale-up, and GMP manufacturing
  • Practical considerations for implementation, calibration, and system integration
  • How this approach has been evaluated in commercial-scale bioprocessing environments

Register to learn how inline refractive index can help bring greater confidence, faster insight, and stronger process control to protein concentration measurement in modern downstream bioprocessing.

Yik Lam Senior Engineer at Biogen

Yik Lam is a Senior Engineer in Technical Development at Biogen (Research Triangle Park, NC), with deep expertise in downstream purification development and technology transfer to manufacturing scale. His work focuses on non-chromatographic separation processes—including harvest, normal flow filtration (NFF), and tangential flow filtration (TFF/UF-DF)—as well as process automation and development of new downstream technologies. He is a co-author on Biogen’s 2023 paper examining UF/DF membrane performance for processing antisense oligonucleotides, reflecting his applied experience in scaling filtration-based unit operations for modern modalities.
