Bioethanol production dry-mill mash preparation

Process and product quality control in bioethanol fuel production process

Ethanol or ethyl alcohol (C2H5OH) fuel is mainly produced by the sugar fermentation process.

For the production of bioethanol, fuel and energy crops are required such as corn, maize, wheat, reed canary grass and cord grass, waste straw, willow and popular tree sawdust.

Motor fuel grade ethanol (MFGE) is produced in dry mill process that consists of 6 steps:

  1. Grinding
  2. Cooking
  3. Fermentation
  4. Distillation
  5. Dehydration
  6. Non-fermentable separation

Vaisala PolarisTM process refractometer provides continuous indication of the concentration throughout the process with excellent repeatability, in particular, in for the following:

  • dilution of molasses
  • degree and end-point of fermentation
  • control and monitoring of purification operations
  • control over distillation efficiency
  • product quality control for ensuring product specifications
