Fuel Cells Maximizing the Efficiency and Lifetime by Using a Warmed Humidity Measurement Probe Technology Polymer Electrode Membrane (PEM) Fuel cell is a significant technology in hydrogen economy. PEM fuel cell has a low operating temperature (<100 °C), which makes it useful in numerous applications, such as power generation, cars and public transportation. The efficiency and lifetime of a PEM Fuel cell is highly dependent on accurate temperature and humidity control. In this application, the sensor is in high humidity environment, typically over 80% relative humidity. This is a challenging environment, since there is a continuous risk of condensation. Condensation may spoil the measurement reading, and it may take a long time from the sensor to recover from the saturated state. Vaisala warmed probe technology is a perfect solution for this challenge. Warmed probe will ensure that the sensor is constantly warmer than the process temperature. VTT, one of the leading research organizations in Finland, is conducting both low temperature (PEM) and high temperature (SOFC) fuel cell research. VTT is utilizing Vaisala HUMICAP® HMT310F, HMT337 humidity instruments, and now also the new HUMICAP® HMP7 smart probe that is part of the modular Indigo product category. VTT also uses GMP343 CO2 transmitters in their fuel cell related research.
