Real-time monitoring of nylon salt, caprolactam and polymer solution concentrations in polyamide fiber production

Nylon 6-6 is an all-synthetic fiber received from polymerization reaction of adipic acid and hexamethylene diamines. 

The reaction between adipic acid and hexamethylene diamine produces examethylene diammonium adipate, commonly called nylon salt. 

The process starts with concentration of the hexamethylene diammonium adipate solution in an evaporator and adding the acetic acid to stabilize the chain length. After evaporation, the salt solution is heated and the remaining water removed. TiO2 dispersion is added and the polymerization takes place. Next, the molten viscous polymer goes through the autoclave, casting wheel and extrusion.

Nylon 6, or caprolactam, is a polymeric fiber derived from only one constituent, caprolactam. It has a lower melting point than nylon 6-6 but is superior in dyeability, elasticity and resistance to light.
