Bioethanol purification

Process and product quality control in bioethanol purification process

After fermentation ethanol is concentrated using distillation and molecular sieve columns.

The ethanol concentration is monitored using Vaisala PolarisTM process refractometer at the feed and product lines of the distillation process to increase efficiency by enabling less energy consumption. The in-line refractometer also monitors the concentration of the top product (ethanol), providing important information for distillation control and optimization. After molecular sieves, the refractometer is monitoring the concentration of the final product.

Next, denaturant, usually 2-5 % gasoline, is added to 100% pure ethanol to render the alcohol unfit for human consumption. Then, the ethanol is stored and ready for transportation and distribution.
