The InterMET Asia exhibition & conference, held in association with the World Bank-GFDRR,  is a unique marketplace bringing together the global weather and climate industry with those in the public and private sectors seeking to mitigate and manage the risks of extreme weather and climate change, and to understand the opportunities.

Combining several technologies in a single wind shear detection solution

Weather has an impact on virtually every operation that takes place at an airport, and poor conditions can lead to flight delays, shutdown of operations and even Gsome accidents in the worst case scenarios. These issues are costly for all stakeholders involved: airlines, airport operators, and passengers.

Among these weather issues, wind shear is one of the most difficult to handle due to its variability and unpredictability. Wind shear related events can have significant impact on safety and capacity at the airport and require accurate forecast.

This presentation will discuss the different types of known wind shear phenomena and how they can be efficiently detected by multiple technologies in all types of weather conditions and integrated in a single wind shear detection system. This solution increases wind shear awareness at the airport and helps smoothen the operations for more safety and reliability.

Welcome to listen to Dr Rémy Parmentier is Head of the Meteorology Business Unit at Leosphere. He is in charge of developing the application of Pulsed Coherent Lidar technology for Air Quality and Meteorology. Having joined Leosphere in 2006 he lead for 10 years the Windcube Lidar R&D team and contributed actively to demonstrating worldwide the benefits of the Lidar technology.

Dr Parmentier holds a PhD in Physics from Univ. of Aix-Marseille (France) and previously worked for Schlumberger (optical sensors and systems development) and the French Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique (fiber optic sensors modeling). He is member of the WMO-CIMO Expert Team on New Remote-Sensing Technologies.

ABSTRACT

A new concept for a 3D urban environmental and atmospheric monitoring infrastructure will be presented. The concept is based on cost efficient compact air quality and weather stations that complement existing reference stations for measurements in the lateral dimension, accompanied by long range vertical scanning wind & aerosol lidars which monitor the lower atmosphere at the top of the urban canopee (so called “laser dome” approach). This unique combination will aggregate in real-time a large amount of climatological and environmental data for sharing with Smart City stakeholders in the form of data or value-added services.

Welcome to listen to Mr. Aki Lilja, who is Director of Sounding Products and Head of Professional Meteorology Segment in Vaisala’s Weather and Environment Business Area. He has more than 20 years of experience in various aspects of meteorological observations, ranging from research work related to ground-based remote sensing systems to sales, business and product management roles. A presenter of weather radar and radiosonde technology at several conferences, he has worked to help meteorological organizations in all continents to improve their observation infrastructure with radiosonde, weather radar and lightning detection technologies in particular.

Most recently he has engaged in supporting and following research related to radiosonde data’s impact to global numerical weather prediction, as well as serving on the World Meteorological Organization’s CIMO Guide Editorial Board as HMEI representative. Mr. Lilja holds a degree of Master of Science, Applied Physics, from the Helsinki University of Technology.

Automated meteorological observation process – benefits for the societal output of meteorological organizations

Professional meteorological observations are needed for initializing numerical weather prediction models as well as for nowcasting and forecasting work by the meteorologists. The timely and trustworthy provisioning of these forecasts is essential for the safety and efficiency of people and business processes in societies.
