THORPEX/Vaisala Cooperative Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program

Vaisala is pleased to announce a program to co-sponsor a limited number of  postdoctoral research fellowships. The aim with the fellowships is to demonstrate the benefit of existing and new observing systems, and strategies in support of global numerical weather prediction. The fellowship award will be made for a period not exceeding two years. Each award will be co-funded by one or more host institutions in addition to Vaisala.  Vaisala will provide up to 50% support not to exceed the equivalent of €50,000 per year per award.

The research fellowship projects will be carried out under the oversight of the World Weather Research Program and THORPEX - A Global Atmospheric Research Programme. The results from these co-sponsored projects will be utilized at an international level in further development of weather observing systems.

Research topics include:

  1. Earth-based atmospheric observing strategies
  2. Existing and new earth-based in situ observing systems and remote sensing systems
  3. The interplay between earth-based and space-based observing systems.

THORPEX is a ten-year international research program, under the auspices of the world Meteorological Organization/World Weather Research Program (WMO/WWRP), to accelerate improvements in short-range, medium-range and extended-range weather predictions and the societal value of advanced forecast products.
