The standard data link between the Vaisala ALARM system and Vaisala electric field mills and Vaisala local lightning is by direct serial connection via two RS-232 ports.

For connecting to sensors within 10,000 feet of the system,
communications hardware is a RS-232 cable, a RS-232/RS-422
interface, and a RS-422 cable.
Other configurations are available for distances exceeding
