Wind Power Forecasting

One of the largest problems with wind power integration is the uncertainty of the wind. This issue is currently a hot topic, drawing attention throughout the wind and utility industry. Short-term wind forecasts can assist this issue and will become critical as more renewable-energy sources are added to the power grid. Vaisala is working with the wind industry to provide these short term wind forecasts and remove the uncertainty weather can bring.

Vaisala’s Ramp Cast is a short-term wind forecast that utilizes real-time data and weather modeling to determine the amount of wind expected in the next three hours. Three hours is a critical time period for utilities or integrators because not only do they need to "keep the lights on", but they also need to keep the power grid operating smoothly. Their job is to balance power plant operations and know how much power each plant or wind farm will produce. That can be challenging if there is uncertainty in the power generation. RampCast allows an integrator to know how much electricity a wind farm will produce in the next three hours. This allows them to plan accordingly, make informed decisions, and save costs.
