1. What made you interested in the Giant Leap internship program?
As a meteorology student, I became familiar with Vaisala through its measuring devices. I have been interested in the company since the early stages of my studies because of Vaisala’s international operations and broad know-how in different subfields of meteorology. In addition, I have a very positive image of Vaisala because the company has kept in touch with our university student association, and the Giant Leap internship program has had good visibility in many events and on many occasions.
2. Could you tell us a little bit about your internship project at Vaisala?
In my project, I got to work in the product development of surface weather observation systems. My job was to compare the performance of different surface weather devices and, at the same time, I had the chance to see what it is like to develop products within an international team. My project was quite flexible but also challenging, which gave me an excellent opportunity to put my skills to the test and develop them even further.
3. What is your educational background? Do you feel that you could apply your skills and knowledge during your time at Vaisala?
I have studied for three years at the University of Helsinki having meteorology as my major and Computer Science as my minor. My studies in meteorology gave me a good starting point for understanding how the surface weather observation devices function, whereas my studies in computer science helped me greatly in analyzing the measurement data.
4. What have you learned from the internship?
I gained valuable experience in product development and the challenges that an international company may face in the process. During my internship, I familiarized myself with many different measurement instruments and how they operate. During my project I also learned new ways of analyzing measurement data. In addition to these, I gathered an excellent overview of all the business areas and operations within Vaisala.
5. How would you describe Vaisala as an employer to students who are seeking an internship?
I am very satisfied with the Giant Leap internship program. Starting already in the recruitment process, all the practical issues have been arranged very well. The interns have had many gatherings and events where we have had the chance to share our experiences and results of our projects. If you would like to experience a challenging and rewarding internship, apply for Giant Leap!
