Anni, Internship in Business Development and Market Intelligence

1. What made you interested in the Giant Leap internship program?
To be honest, I wasn’t well aware of Vaisala’s Giant Leap program until my friends at the university began talking about it. I got excited about the opportunity and talked with Vaisala personnel at a career forum: I considered and still consider the GL program as a great opportunity to learn a lot and to work with international ventures. It was the chance to come as I am and work on a project that matches my interests that convinced me. At Vaisala, every Giant Leap Intern is greatly valued, and every project arises from a business need: you are not just another summer intern; you really matter exactly as you are.

2. Could you tell us a little bit about your internship project at Vaisala?
I was responsible for defining the global business opportunities for a specific Vaisala application in the High Speed Rail industry. In short, this primarily included determining the market size and market growth, and providing strategic recommendations based on my findings. Apart from my individual business project, I was also in charge of event management for a Market Intelligence Workshop Day organized for Vaisala employees at the Helsinki office.

3. What is your educational background? Do you feel that you could apply your skills and knowledge during your time at Vaisala?
I have a BBA in International Business & High Tech Management, and currently I am a double degree student working towards a master’s degree at Aalto University School of Economics and ESADE Business School in Barcelona. My studies helped me a great deal to bring theory into practice, but I also obtained valuable help from the Vaisala personnel whenever I needed it. I would say that your success at Vaisala depends on you and your proactive attitude, rather than just your academic knowledge.

4. What have you learned from the internship?
I learned lots of hard skills related to market research and analysis, but I also learned a lot about myself. This experience awakened a passion for marketing in me! Additionally, as you are surrounded by other smart Giant Leap Interns, you also learn a lot from them and their projects.

5. How would you describe Vaisala as an employer to students who are seeking an internship?
Go for it! I can honestly say that Vaisala is a great place to work. You, as an intern, are trusted but they also expect a lot from you. You will be challenged, but they are open to help and will listen to you. Vaisala employees have a great sense of unity, and you’ll get to meet wonderful people in the Giant Leap program. You will have a great time at Vaisala!
