Vaisala AviMet® Runway Water Level Indicator System

Aquaplaning is a phenomenon that can occur when a layer of water builds up between the aircraft’s tires and the runway surface. It may result in a situation where braking action on the wheel is not effective.

Vaisala AviMet® Runway Water Level Indicator System is a decision support tool for air traffic controllers and pilots to increase safety and efficiency in their operations with a patented and innovative method.

    Overview

     Overview

Aquaplaning poses a serious risk to aviation safety during heavy rain, and it is most frequent in the tropics. It has been a contributing factor in some aircraft incidents and accidents.

Accurate information on water level thickness on the runway helps pilots to make better decisions on how to land safely. Until recently, a comprehensive and reliable method for assessing the thickness of the water layer has not been available.

     System

The Vaisala AviMet® Runway Water Level Indicator System provides real time water level thickness assessments on every third of the runway and helps pilots to perform safe and efficient landings and take-offs when there is water on runway. The system consist of several field sensors and runway water level thicknesses are estimated based on Vaisala’s algorithm considering the following:

    • current precipitation accumulation value
    • previous precipitation accumulation values
    • the flow-off value from the runway surface
