Terhi graduated from high school in 2001 and enrolled in engineering physics at the Helsinki University of Technology that same year. When still at high school she had spent summers working in the production of Vaisala’s “weather balloons,” also known as radiosondes. This sparked her interest in the planning and development of sounding systems for weather measurement, and may well have affected her choice of education.
New challenges awaited Terhi in the summer of 2002 when she worked at the Vaisala measurement laboratory. Afterwards she spent a couple of summers as a research assistant in a laboratory at her university. In 2005 she secured a summer job at Vaisala Measurement Systems. She spent that summer modeling thermal conduction in temperature sensors in Vaisala sounding systems.
The following fall Terhi studied in the United States, where the familiar company name reappeared in a grimmer context: Vaisala equipment was used to measure the ferocious movements of Hurricane Katrina.
In the spring of 2006 Terhi was awarded a six-month scholarship for her diploma work at Vaisala Measurement Systems. After that she was hired by Vaisala for an additional three months to complete her diploma.
Since April 2007 Terhi has worked as a sensor engineer at Vaisala Instruments. She graduated with a Master of Science degree in engineering at the end of the year. She is currently involved in testing the qualities of Vaisala humidity sensors in different conditions and further improving the already high product quality. Industrial companies greatly rely on humidity sensors to support their production processes. Terhi is also taking part in the planning process, and as her understanding of the products and clients has deepened, so her tasks have grown more interesting.
Terhi has greatly enjoyed her work at Vaisala. Her tasks have continually become more challenging, and her co-workers are enthusiastic experts of the highest caliber—and, on top of that, nice people. Furthermore, her work is far from mere theory: at Vaisala she sees the products in practical use all the time. Her employer is known for the world-leading quality of its products, and the international atmosphere—25 offices around the world—adds to the unique nature of her work.
Terhi has completed an introductory course in meteorology, one of Vaisala’s numerous internal training programs that reflect our commitment to the professional and personal development of our staff.
Vaisala’s goal is to offer a foundation for environmental protection, safety
and better quality of life. Terhi is pleased to work in a challenging field with
social significance.
